Why should you use other OSes full of bloatware and unnecessary stuff when you can use a perfectly fine Linux alternative? Most distros are portable and can run on a Live CD/USB, without a hard drive.

You can install them on some bleeding-edge hardware and get the ultimate performance. Lightweight distros don’t even have to be used on old hardware. Install a lightweight Linux distro on them and they’re as good as new. You don’t have to throw away your old PCs and laptops. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just pick any distro. All distros are free and can run on ~512MB RAM or less. We purposefully included many distros in our list so you have more options to choose from. It took us 7 months to compile this list and a few weeks to update it with new data! We’ve seen new lists that included distros with their latest update being in 2005. Sure, there are other similar lists our there, but this one has up-to-date info and we’ve personally tried and tested (almost) every distro on our old laptops. Just about everything in Linux at the OS level will run at disk speed unless you upgrade to the latest most expensive SSD.With the feedback and requests we got from our Best Linux Distros for Gaming list, we had to do another list of the best lightweight Linux distros. OS level system applications, like backups, run in a fraction of one core and are limited by disk speed, not processor speed. Those applications can be slow with 4 or 8 cores.
The same core can run email and the first tab of a Web browser when using Javascript blockers like Noscript.Ī 4 GHz core is slow when running some Javascript, some image transformations, and video editing. You can run the GUI in one core of an old processor. The Web browser uses far more resources than the GUI. There are tuning options for all three LM GUIs. The only GUI interface I find to be really fast is the Lxde GUI in the Raspberry Pi OS and that is mainly because the Raspberry Pi people spent years tuning the OS for the computer. With effects off, I have run Cinnamon on a pathetic Netbook. In Cinnamon, you can also switch off Effects which makes Cinnamon similar to MATE. A GPU can make Cinnamon run faster than MATE in the same environment. Note that Cinnamon is the only one to use a GPU if there is a GPU. Been good for the last 6 years since 17 all the way through 20. I have no problems with dual core 1.8ghz, 4gb ram, using Mint Cinnamon 64 bit.
You can take my suggestion with a grain of salt, ( * i have personally found anything 64-bit with less than a 2.6ghz cpu sluggish )įor 64-bit systems i suggest CPU 2.6ghz (quad or higher) with 4-8 gig of ram (potential light steam gaming)įor 64-bit systems with CPU 3ghz+ ( quad or higher) you could have lower ram 2-4gig ( no steam gaming)įor 64-bit systems with CPU 3ghz+ ( quad or higher) 8+gig ram ( medium to high steam gaming )įor 64-bit systems >2.4ghz ( duo )possibly better off with 32-bit system Knowing the hardware (aka cpu, ram, wifi or ethernet connection requirement ) and usage requirements, would go a long way to helping you determine if its right for you. *success rates can very per person and is dependant on what one considers a success.
